La Altagracia
La Altagracia is the easternmost of the 32 provinces of the Dominican Republic. The name commemorates the painting of Our Lady of La Altagracia, brought from Spain in the sixteenth century. Several miracles are attributed to this work. The Virgin named a sanctuary in Salvaleón de Higüey, on which in the second half of the 20th century the cathedral or Basilica of Our Lady of Altagracia was built, inaugurated in 1971. It is currently the country's leading province in terms of tourism. The province has the luxury of having the Punta Cana International Airport which is the most important airport on the island since it receives 64% of all flights arriving in the country, it is also the first international private airport worldwide.
