Itapúa is one of the seventeen departments that, together with Asunción, Distrito Capital, form the Republic of Paraguay. Its capital is Encarnación. It is located in the southern region of the eastern region of the country, bounded on the north by Caazapá and Alto Paraná, on the south and east by the Paraná river that separates it from Argentina, and on the west by Misiones. With 600 011 habs. In 2018 it is the third most populated department -behind Central and Alto Paraná-, with 16 525 km², the sixth largest -behind Boquerón, Alto Paraguay, Presidente Hayes, San Pedro and Concepción- and with 35.8 inhabitants / km², the sixth most densely populated, behind Central, Cordillera, Alto Paraná, Guairá and Caaguazú.
Economically, it is considered the third most important department - behind Central and Alto Paraná - and it is known as the granary of Paraguay.
