Malaita
The province of Malaita is one of the largest provinces of the Solomon Islands. Its name is due to the largest island, Malaita. The province includes other islands such as Malaita Sur, Sikaiana and Ontong Java also called Lord Howe Island. The provincial capital and largest urban center is Auki, on the island of Malaita. The estimated population is 142,000. The area of the province is 4,225 km². The inhabitants of the main island are ethnic Melanesian, by its geographical location in the archipelago of the Solomon Islands. The islands of Ontong Java and Sikaiana, located further east and of later settlement, belong to Polynesia from an ethnological point of view.
