Kampong Thom
The Province of Kompung Thom is a province of the Kingdom of Cambodia located in the northeast of the country and whose capital is the city of Kompung Thom. The word Kompung translates into Khmer "Port" and Thom means "big" or "main". Kompung Thom is also the birthplace of the famous leader of the Khmer Rouge, Saloth Sar, who would go down in history as Pol Pot, and who was born in the village of Prek Sbauv, on the banks of the Sen River.
Apart from this, the province has other historical importance given its proximity to the temples of Angkor such as Kuhear Nokor Temple, founded by King Suryavarman I and Mount Suntok, an authentic Buddhist theme park with 809 steps leading to an archaeological complex.
