North Western
The Northwest Province is a province of Sri Lanka. Its capital is Kurunegala, which has a population of 28,571 inhabitants. The province is known mainly for its numerous coconut plantations. Other important cities in this province are Chilaw and Puttalam, fishing towns. The majority of the population of the Northwest Province belongs to the Sinhalese ethnic group. There is also an ethnic minority of Sri Lankan Moors living in the vicinity of Puttalam. Fishing, the cultivation of some cereals and the plantations of the rubber tree are other prominent industries in the region. The province has an area of 7,888 km², and a population of 2,370,075 inhabitants.
