Gorno-Badakhshan
The Autonomous Province of Badakhshan Mountainous or Autonomous Province of Upper Badakhshan is a mountainous province of Tajikistan, hence its name. Located in the Pamir mountain range, it constitutes about 45% of the national surface, but only 3% of the population. The name Gorno-Badakhshan was the old denomination in Russian and means High Badakhshan or Badakhshan Mountainous. The majority of the province was claimed for a long time by the People's Republic of China as part of Sinkiang province, until the signing of an agreement with the government of Tajikistan in 2002.
