The Missouri or Missouri is the longest river in North America. Flows through the northern United States in a southeasterly direction through seven states - Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas and Missouri - to drain into the Mississippi River, of which it is its main tributary, very close from the city of San Luis. It has a length of 4090 km, but if you consider the Mississippi-Missouri system, it reaches 6275 km, which makes it the fourth longest in the world, after the Amazon, Nile and Yangtze rivers.
It drains a basin of 2 980 000 km², the sixth largest in the world, sparsely populated and with a semi-arid climate that includes part of ten states of the United States and two Canadian provinces. The main cities that crosses the Missouri are Great Falls, Bismarck, Sioux City, Omaha and Kansas City. For more than 12,000 years, many people have depended on the Missouri and its tributaries as a source of sustenance and transportation. More than ten large groups of Native Americans populated their basin, mostly with a nomadic lifestyle, which depended on the huge herds of bison that once roamed across the Great Plains. The first Europeans found the river at the end of the 17th century: it was discovered by the French explorer Étienne de Veniard. The region passed through Spanish and French hands before becoming part of the United States, after the purchase of Louisiana.
For a long time it was believed that this river could be part of the Northwest Passage - a waterway that would link the Atlantic and the Pacific - but when the expedition of Lewis and Clark managed to cross it for the first time in its entire length, it was confirmed that That mythical way through the interior of the continent was nothing more than a legend. During the 19th century, the Missouri was one of the main routes for the expansion to the Far West. In the early 1800s, the growth of the fur trade caused the trappers to explore the region and open new roads. Beginning in the 1830s, the pioneers went en masse to the West, first in wagons, and then in the growing number of steamboats that began operating on the river. The ancient lands of the natives in the basin were taken by the settlers, which led to some of the longest and most violent wars against the native peoples in American history. During the twentieth century, the Missouri basin developed extensively for irrigation, flood control and hydroelectric power generation.
Fifteen dams dammed the main course of the river, with hundreds more in its tributaries. The meanders were reduced and the river was channeled to improve navigation, reducing its length by more than 320 km. Although the lower part of the Missouri River valley is now an agricultural and industrial, populated and highly productive region, the strong development has taken its toll on wildlife and fish populations, as well as on the quality of the waters. Several stretches of the Missouri have been declared as national wild and scenic river: on October 12,1976 a long stretch of 239.8 km, in Montana. On November 10,1978, another stretch of 95 km, between Nebraska and South Dakota. And on May 24,1991, a final stretch of 62.7 km, also between Nebraska and South Dakota.
