Porterville, founded in 1902, is a city located in Tulare County in the US state of California. In the year 2000 it had a population of 39,615 inhabitants and a population density of 1,085.3 people per km². During the Spanish period of California, the San Joaquin Valley was considered a remote region of little value. The emigrants surrounded the foothills of the east near Porterville from 1826. The swamps stretched to the bottom of the valley with lush reeds or "tulares", as the natives called them. The gold discovered in 1848 brought a tremendous migration to California, and the schooners of the prairies passed through Porterville between 1849 and 1852.

From 1854, Peter Goodhue operated a stopping place on the Stockton - Los Angeles Road, on the banks of the river Tule. The caravans of gold prospectors waded through the town, but other travelers found the rich land and stayed to establish farms. A store was created in 1856 to sell products to the miners and natives who lived on the tribal lands along the rivers. From 1858 to 1861 it was the location of the Tule river station of the Butterfield Overland Mail post company. Royal Porter Putnam came to town in 1860 to raise cattle, horses and pigs. He bought Goodhue the same year and made the station a popular stop and hotel called Porter Station.

He bought 40 acres of land and built a two-story tent and hotel on the highest point of the marsh property, which is now the corner of Oak and Main. The city of Porterville was founded there in 1864. It took its name from the founder's first name because another Putnam family lived south of the city. In 1862,20.8 inches of juvia fell in that area causing the current change of the Tule River. The Putnam acres dried up and he managed to measure his property to establish lot lines and streets. The villagers were given a plot of land for each one purchased. The lack of food and resources of the new population of California created the impetus for the permanent development of the eastern side of the San Joaquin Valley. In 1888 the railroad, Southern Pacific Railway built a fork line from Fresno. The Hotel and Pioneer Bank were built by a businessman from San Francisco. Porterville was incorporated as a city in 1902, when the miners moved to the area to extract magnetic ore, and the Chamber of Commerce was founded in 1907. A local government composed of a municipal manager and a civil council was adopted and in 1926 adopted a statute. The city has grown from a community of 5,000 in 1920. Farming facilitated by the Central Valley Water Project has been the main source of economic growth in the area. The city is in the center of one of the largest agricultural areas recognized by citrus and cattle. The industry has become a significant factor for the community.

The Distribution Center of Wal-Mart, National Vitamin, Beckman Instruments, Standard Register, Sierra Pacific Apparel, Royalty Carpeting and other small companies have factories in Porterville. Several public facilities are also located here. These include the Porterville Development Center, the headquarters of the Sequoia National Park, the Lake Success facility of the United States Army Corps of Engineers, and Porterville College, one of the nine colleges of the Kern Community "College" District.
