More information about Lafayette

Marie-Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de La Fayette, known as La Fayette or Lafayette, was a French soldier, aristocrat and politician. He fought for the United States in the War of Independence, serving as general, and in which he was considered one of the heroes. Following this was a close friend of George Washington, Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson. In addition Lafayette was a key figure in the French Revolution of 1789 and in the July Revolution of 1830, as well as a member of the National Assembly and commander of the Paris National Guard. Born in Chavaniac, in the province of Auvergne in south central France, Lafayette came from an old wealthy and landowner family.

He followed the martial tradition of his family and was appointed officer at 13 years of age. He was convinced that the American cause in his revolutionary war was noble, so he traveled to the New World seeking glory. There, he was named major general, although at the beginning he was not given troops to command. He was wounded in the Battle of Brandywine, but he was still able to organize an orderly retreat. He served with distinction in the Battle of Rhode Island. In the middle of the war, he returned home to lobby for an increase in French support and returned to America in 1780, where he was awarded high positions in the Continental Army.

In 1781, troops under his command in Virginia blocked the forces led by Cornwallis until other American and French reinforcements could position themselves for the decisive Yorktown Siege. Lafayette returned to France and, in 1787, was appointed to the Assembly of Notables convened in response to the fiscal crisis. He was elected member of the States General of 1789, where representatives of the three traditional orders of the French society met. He helped write the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen with the assistance of Thomas Jefferson. After the capture of the Bastille, Lafayette was appointed commander-in-chief of the National Guard and tried to adopt an intermediate position during the French Revolution. In August of 1792, the radical factions ordered his arrest, so he fled to Belgium. However, he was captured by Austrian troops and spent more than five years in prison.

Lafayette returned to France after Napoleon Bonaparte guaranteed his release in 1797, although he refused to participate in Napoleon's government. After the Bourbon Restoration of 1814, he became a liberal member of the Chamber of Deputies, a position he would hold for most of the rest of his life. In 1824, President James Monroe invited Lafayette to the United States as a guest of the nation. During the trip, he visited all the 24 states of the union, receiving an intense reception. During the July Revolution of France in 1830, Lafayette refused the offer to become a French dictator. Instead, he supported Luis Felipe as king, but turned against him when the monarch became autocratic. Lafayette died on May 20,1834, and was buried in the Picpus Cemetery in Paris, under the land of Bunker Hill.

For his achievements in both the service of France and the United States, he is known as "The Hero of Two Worlds".
