Bethel, in Hebrew, means "house of God", is the name of a Canaanite city of the ancient Samaria region, located in the center of the land of Canaan, northwest of Ai by the road to Shechem, 30 kilometers away south of Silo and about 16 kilometers north of Jerusalem.
