Chicago School is the historical denomination of an architectural style that developed in the city of Chicago in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, a pioneer in the introduction of new materials and techniques for the construction of large commercial buildings and the first skyscrapers. It arises in the United States, where historical references have less weight and importance than in Europe. The socio-economic context is that of a very prosperous city and a considerable demographic increase. The Great Fire of Chicago left most of the city destroyed, which meant having to raise it again and gave town planning maximum relevance.

The need to create such a considerable amount of new buildings gave rise to the emergence of the school, by providing a demand for projects that no other place could match. There was great speculation about the land, which stimulated the architectural solutions that involved vertical construction: many floors raised on a reduced floor. The number of floors of the first buildings of the school is quite modest for the later criteria, but for its time they were quite an achievement. At the same time, the first electric elevators appeared. The different architects and architecture workshops of the Chicago school proposed similar solutions among them, which determined the definition of a true common architectural style: concrete pillars as support or foundation, metallic structures covered according to the function of the building, continuous windows that they occupied most of the facades and the removal, in many cases, of the load-bearing walls.

Buildings with thick stone walls were no longer built, in favor of attractive masonry facades that suppress decorative elements. It is bet by smooth and glazed surfaces where the horizontal and vertical lines predominate. The models created in Chicago soon began to be emulated in other cities of the United States, and are at the origin of the architectural renovation of the first third of the 20th century. The architectural verticality and the abandonment of the load wall, is accentuated and modulated by the rhythm of the carpentry, the straight lines and the balanced and constant dialogue between the solid and the translucent, the latter being the most predominant and enriching of both the language exterior, as well as the interior spaces, generating more than enough illumination.

The 1893 Columbian World Exposition in Chicago gave the opportunity to present the new city to the world. And it brought as a consequence a movement of reaction in the new generation of American architects, many of them from the Midwest, who goes by the name of Prairie School. Already in 1938, the arrival in the city of Mies van der Rohe meant the development of the new approaches that characterize the so-called second Chicago school. With the name of Chicago seven is known a group of seven architects of the 1970s.
