Cortazar is one of the 46 municipalities of the State of Guanajuato, in Mexico. It is located southeast of its territory in the Bajío region and sits on the banks of the Laja river. It has an extension of 367 km², equivalent to 1.2% of the state surface. It borders to the north with the municipalities of Villagrán and Celaya, to the east with Celaya, to the west with Salamanca, to the southeast with Tarimoro, to the south with Salvatierra and to the southwest with Jaral del Progreso. With the arrival of the Spaniards it was called Degno-Yahhiu. On May 5,1721, the Franciscan religious founded it legally and called it San José de los Amoles. For October 21,1857, the Congress of Guanajuato, decreed to be called Villa de Cortazar in honor of Mr. Luis Cortazar y Rábago, who decreed independence for the first time in the entity.
