Etchojoa is a community of the state of Sonora. It has an area of 1,220 km². To the west, 10 km away is the Siaric beach on the Sea of Cortez. The following towns belong to this municipality: Vasconia, Bacame Nuevo, Basconcobe, Buaysiacobe, Bacobampo, Campanichaca, Caurarajaqui, Chucarit, Sahuaral, Las Mil Hectáreas, Las Playitas, Mochipaco, Mocorúa, San Pedro, Villa Tres Cruces, among many others. Etchojoa means in cáhita "House of the cactus". Inhabited in its origins by the May tribe it gives its name to the valley where it is located as well as to the river that crosses it. Etchojoa is one of the seven towns that make up the May ethnic group.
Founded in 1613 as Visiting Village of the Mission of Santa Cruz del Río Mayo by the Jesuit missionary Pedro Méndez. In 1796, when the missionary system decayed, two sites of cattle major of the Etchojoa estates were attributed by title to Marcos Valenzuela, thus initiating the miscegenation of the population. In 1909 it was declared a municipality. In 1930, the first clearings and agrarian endowments were carried out that propitiated an acceleration of the demographic growth. The populations of Bacobampo and Colonia Irrigation arose, among many others. The municipality is located in the south of the state of Sonora and it borders to the north and the east with Navojoa, to the south with Huatabampo, to the northwest with Cajeme and to the west with the Sea of Cortés. It has a beautiful coastline with pristine beaches that are not currently exploited touristically.
Fishing is favorable and abundant: sawfish, grouper and croaker, among others. A unique show is repeated the first months of each year: whales from cold waters seek to reproduce the warm waters of the Sea of Cortez. The Etchojoa coastline offers the visitor this extraordinary experience.
