In the Mexican state of Michoacán, Lake Pátzcuaro is one of the most visited tourist attractions that is part of a corridor of archaeological, historical, recreational and cultural sites of the Purépecha ethnic group, which goes from Morelia to Uruapan. Its coastline is 55 km, and contains seven islands: Janitzio, La Pacanda, Yunuén, Tecuena, a small islet called "Copujo" that is near the island Tecuena, Jarácuaro, as well as two more islands: Urandén Morelos and Urandén Morales.
These last two maintain their island characteristics thanks to the dredging program carried out by the government of the state of Michoacán, since otherwise they would be joined to the mainland by the descent in the water level. In this particular site there is a boating school that takes advantage of artificial canals to promote sports, a fact that has given Mexico a world-class champion: José Everardo Cristóbal Quirino. The lake has suffered for several decades a process of descent in water level, pollution and eutrophication, as a consequence of climate change, the growth of surrounding populations, deforestation and soil erosion. Several government studies have sought to know the problems of the lake basin in depth since the appearance of the Patzcuaro Limnological Station in 1938, and thereby solve the environmental problems that still persist in the lake. There are still fragments of pine forest and oak where skunks, opossums, badgers, squirrels, rabbits and gray foxes live.
The lake has a great variety of aquatic flora and nine species of native fish: the famous white fish, three types of charales, acobada, tiro, chegua, tirípichos and allotocas. So also three introduced species, such as the largemouth bass, tilapia and carp. The economy of the region focuses on the collection of foreign currency by migrants to the United States, as well as tourism as a second pillar of the economic sustenance on which hotels, restaurants, artisans, etc. Depend. The most important tourist activity is the boat trip to the island of Janitzio, and the creation of new ecotourism developments on the island of Yunuén. The celebration of the Day of the Dead is a world-renowned event that takes place on this lake every November 2.
The inhabitants of the region go to the cemetery and adorn the tombs with cempasúchitl flowers and place offerings in a candlelight atmosphere, in order to remember the deceased loved ones. The show takes place in several places on the lake, in which the celebrations of Janitzio and Tzintzuntzan stand out, where the greatest number of tourists take place. It is divided between the municipalities of Erongarícuaro, Quiroga, Pátzcuaro and Tzintzuntzan. The lake and its islands appear on the coat of arms of the city of Patzcuaro.
