Santa María is a Colombian municipality located in the northwest of the department of Huila. It limits by the north with Neiva. On the south with Teruel. As we see, it refers to the central mountain range, specifically to the region between La Plata and Órganos, the latter located northeast of Santa María in the territory of the Municipality of Neiva.

Also at the time of the violence the Corregidor was in charge of organizing the defense of the town and making the corresponding corpses. According to testimony of Roberto Saenz Perdomo, the corregidor's administrative decisions were made through a Decree that was promulgated preceded by the drum beat in the public square.

By the time the Santa María Police Inspectorate was created, there is already a population of more than two thousand inhabitants and the community is in the process of consolidating the community organization from the Communal Action Boards. This period corresponds to the final phase of the period known as "the political violence" of the 1950s. The population is in a process of continuous growth due to the migrations of conservative families, from Cundinamarca, Boyacá, Sur del Tolima and Northwest of the Valley, along with this phenomenon of settlement there is the development of agriculture, especially the pea and coffee cultivation.
