Chat in La Villa del Rosario

The city of Villa del Rosario is the capital of the Rosario de Perijá municipality in the state of Zulia. It is located in the western part of Lake Maracaibo. Its area is 3,543 km², which represents 7.04 of the state's surface. The capital is the populated center of La Villa del Rosario and politically it is divided into three parishes: El Rosario, Donaldo García and Sixto Zambrano. Cruz ordered that the King's orders be executed. Another version corresponds to the chronicler of the town, Mr. Oscálido Montero, who for the year of 1722 receives the order of the King to pacify the Indians and populate the area, but it is not until the following year that it begins, or together with 150 others.

Men to open roads and build fortifications, to finally, in 1724 found the town of La Villa del Rosario. It is interesting to note that many of the families that came to populate the Villa in the 18th century were of Canarian origin and of Maracaibo. In 1752 Juan de Chourio died without succeeding in completing the pacification of the Indians. In 1775 Bishop Mariano Martí arrived in La Villa where he reported that there were 127 houses and 488 people. The oldest document he found in the church was a burial record on October 19,1724, which proves that the year of foundation was at least 1724.

After 150 years of existence an event occurs in the population, in 1872 Perija rebels against the government of Antonio Guzman Blanco, and the leader Venancio Pulgar, president of Zulia at that time was called to quell the uprising of the perijaneros. The annoyance of this was even greater since Pulgar himself was a native of Perijá. Thus, in June of that same year, Pulgar lashed out at Villa del Rosario, setting fire to the town, for not having obtained support for Guzman Blanco's cause in the area. Event for which the town took more than 60 years to emerge again. Obliging many of the hacendados and inhabitants to migrate towards the south-west forming new towns, what is now known as Machiques and San Jose, populations born by this event after this destruction. The years passed and with them the growth of the Villa that, in parallel, was increasingly consolidated as land with agricultural and livestock potential.

For the first time perijaneros saw in their territory machines used to deforest and build communication routes, they used wood as fuel. In 1929 an important event took place: the arrival of electricity in the town. On October 12,1944, the Perijá highway was finally inaugurated during the government of Isaías Medina Angarita. New homes were built, while commercial stores began to cram their downtown and surroundings. However, the most accelerated socio-economic development of this region was recorded during the last decades of the 20th century. During that time, the villarosarenses promoted the productivity of their lands, the recovery of their houses, the increase of their properties and an accelerated boom in commercial and industrial activity and its importance is that the municipality is like a geographical laboratory of Zulia.
