Chajul - or San Gaspar Chajul - is a municipality in the department of Quiché in the western part of the Republic of Guatemala. According to the population census of 2002 it has a population of 31,780 inhabitants, and a territorial extension of 598 km² The municipality of Chajul has a municipal capital with the same name, as well as sixty rural communities, the largest being Ilom, Finca la Perla, Sotzíl, Xolcuay, San Joaquín Chel, San José Xix. When Spaniards and indigenous Tlaxcalans and Cholulans invaded Guatemala in the 1520s, Chajul and other indigenous Ixil and Uspantek peoples resisted the conquest for several years because of their location in the Cuchumatanes mountains and the ferocity of their warriors.
After several years of defeating the Spanish conquest attempts, they were finally defeated in December 1530, and the surviving warriors were marked as slaves in punishment for their prolonged resistance. During the colonial era it was a doctrine of the Dominican friars and after the Independence of Central America, after the Liberal Reform of 1871, on August 12,1872 the de facto government of the provisional president Miguel García Granados created the department of Quiché, that Chajul has belonged since then. Since 1970, it has been part of the Northern Transversal Strip and at the beginning of the 1980s it was the scene of bloody battles between the Guatemalan Army and the Guerrilla Army of the Poor during the Guatemalan Civil War.
