El Estor is a municipality in the department of Izabal of the north-eastern region of the Republic of Guatemala. It is the second largest municipality that has the department of Izabal being surpassed only by Livingston. After the Independence of Central America in 1821, because of the inhospitable and withdrawn of the region, all Izabal was designated as a dependent district of the department of Verapaz, and as part of the Zacapa cirtuito that belonged to District No.4 for the delivery of justice. The municipality of El Estor was founded as a village in the municipality of Livingston on October 29,1886.
In it, the position of Political Commissioner and Justice of the Peace was established with a monthly allowance of forty pesos in accordance with the governmental agreement of the General Manuel Lisandro Barillas Bercián, considering that, according to the Political Chief of Lívingston, the villages of El Estor, Quebrada del Zute, Cahaboncito and Chachal were so distant and isolated from the head of that department. All those villages, except El Estor, passed to the departmental jurisdiction of Alta Verapaz by governmental agreement of November 2,1887. El Estor was elevated to the category of municipality on November 5,1890, always during the government of General Barillas. The municipality was created and the creation of the positions of Political Commissioner and Justice of the Peace of the municipality was ratified, with a monthly endowment of forty pesos. According to the agreement of the Executive of January 20,1940, the government of General Jorge Ubico moved to El Estor to the department of Alta Verapaz, which was reversed by the government of Juan José Arévalo after the overthrow of Ubico by another government agreement of 5 June 1945.
The Northern Transversal Strip was officially created during the government of General Carlos Arana Osorio in 1970, through Decree 60-70 in the Congress of the Republic, for the establishment of agrarian development, and the entire department of Izabal During the government of Julio César Méndez Montenegro, the possibility of transferring the nickel mines in Izabal to a Canandian company was discussed and the government planned to grant a 40-year concession for the exploitation of the nickel to the company « Exploraciones y Exploraciones Mineras de Izabal, SA ", a subsidiary of the Canadian company" International Nickel Company."Numerous social sectors and opposed it, since they argued that it would be very burdensome for the country. In 1981 EXMIBAL closed its operations and left the country, but did not treat the toxic waste remain in the area. At the beginning of the 21st century, palm oil gained ground displacing other oils, and its cultivation increased in the Transversal Belt of the North and Petén.
