Puerto de Iztapa is a municipality in the department of Escuintla in the Republic of Guatemala, located on the shores of the Pacific Ocean and bathed by the Michatoya and María Linda rivers and the Chiquimulilla Canal. It has around 25 thousand inhabitants, and its mayor is Mario Mejía, who took over after Edwin Chicas, mayor re-elected in September 2015, died in a traffic accident. It was the main port of the south coast of Guatemala until in 1852 Puerto San José was built in the place known then as El Zapote.
Later, when the facilities of Puerto San José showed serious deficiencies for the embarkation and disembarkation of passengers, the government of General José María Reina Barrios undertook an ambitious project for the construction of an efficient port in Iztapa in 1896. This project was to be part of the project. Of the great national project of the Interoceanic Railway that was going to connect Puerto Barrios with Iztapa and serve as a dry canal at a time when the Panama Canal still did not exist. The investment was quite large and, had it been concluded, it would have been an excellent source investment for Guatemala, but unfortunately the international price of coffee and silver fell precipitously and the government could not complete the last section of the railroad: from El Rancho de San Agustín to Guatemala City, as the land was extremely steep and there were not enough funds, everything was inconclusive, including the port of Iztapa.
What's more, President Reina Barrios paid for it very dearly, since he was assassinated on February 8,1898 as a result of the economic crisis that was unleashed. The inhabitants of the municipality are engaged in artisanal fishing, agriculture, and the care and service of "chalets" that are on the seashore, and a high percentage of the population works in the Port Company Quetzal. The most common means of transport is the bicycle and rowing or chopped boats. To go to some of their villages it is mandatory to cross by ferry, if you go by motor vehicle or by boat. Its patronal feast dedicated to San Rafael Arcángel is celebrated on October 24. In this traditional celebration, the "Paseo de San Rafael by the river".
