Palencia is a municipality in the department of Guatemala, located 28 km northeast of Guatemala City, capital of the Republic of Guatemala. The municipality extends over a jungle area, with a dispersed population in small nuclei, usually no more than 3,000 individuals. The 2002 census showed a total of 52,252 inhabitants. After the Independence of Central America and after the expulsion of the regular orders and the conservative party in 1829, the Liberals under Francisco Morazán auctioned the hacienda among their co-religionists. However, after the overthrow of the Liberal government of Mariano Gálvez in 1838, the return of the conservatives and the religious orders was allowed, who little by little recovered their former assets, although they never did so in full.
The hacienda belonged to the conservative general Rafael Carrera, president of the Republic, but when he had to go into exile in 1848 he sold it to the Dominican friars. Carrera returned in 1849 and was appointed presidnete for life in 1854. After his death in 1865, Marshal Serapio Cruz -who had been a trusted ally of Carrera and was originally from Palencia- realized that he could take power and initiated a revolt in 1870, but was defeated and passed by arms in Palencia in 1870. His body was decapitated and his head was taken to Guatemala City as a war trophy. This bloody fact was the spark that ignited the Liberal Revolution that overthrew the government of Marshal Vicente Cerna and Cerna on June 30,1871. The area of Palencia was a hacienda that belonged to the Dominican friars during the conservative government of General Rafael Carrera.
But after the Liberal Revolution, taking advantage of the fact that the de facto president, Miguel García Granados, was absent, placating a conservative revolt, the acting president, Justo Rufino Barrios, expelled the friars and expropriated the hacienda, converting it into an ejido to be auctioned among its correliginaries.1872. Among its main towns are the Mixcos, El Paraíso, San Sur, El Fiscal and Azacualpilla, and among its notable citizens is Marshal Serapio Cruz, popularly known by Guatemalans as "Tatalapo".
