San Francisco El Alto is a municipality in the department of Totonicapán of the south-western region of the Republic of Guatemala. It celebrates its titular celebration the 4 of October of each year in honor to its santo employer. In 1820, towards the end of the colony, its inhabitants participated in an indigenous revolt against excessive tributes led by Atanasio Tzul, which rose up against the peninsular and creole authorities in Totonicapán and Santa María Chiquimula, but was repressed by Ladino militiamen, mainly from San Carlos Sija.
After the Independence of Central America in 1821, San Francisco was part of the department Totonicapán / Huehuetenango, and in 1838 it passed to the State of Los Altos, which was approved by the Congress of the Federal Republic of Central America in that same year. In the new state there were constant peasant revolts and tension with Guatemala, until hostilities broke out in 1840, and conservative mestizo general Rafael Carrera regained the region for Guatemala. The department of Totonicapán / Huehuetenango remained as such until August 12,1872, when the Liberal Revolution of 1871 had already triumphed six years after the death of General Carrera. On that date, the de facto government of the provisional president Miguel García Granados created the new department of Quiché taking a large part of the vast territories of Totonicapán / Huehuetenango and Sololá / Suchitepéquez, and from that moment, San Francisco El Alto became part of the new department of Totonicapán.
