San Juan Ixcoy, also known as the land of apples, is a municipality in the department of Huehuetenango in the northwestern region of the Republic of Guatemala, and its official language is Q'anjob'al. San Juan Ixcoy is a municipality rich in Mayan culture and art, its diversity of languages, its typical costumes, its history, its meals, its patron saint festivals, its Mayan altars, the dance dramas and the colorful dances of Kanal Tz'unun, Kanal Tuluxh, Kanal Wakax, Kanal Chej and the Cortez dance. After the conquest of Guatemala the town was an encomienda, but already in the seventeenth century, San Juan Ixcoy was a doctrine of the Mercedarian convent of San Pedro Zuluma. After the Mercedarians delivered their doctrines to the secular clergy in 1754, Archbishop Pedro Cortés y Larraz visited the town in his pastoral life indicating that he visited the town "going down a bad road when he left Chiantla to the parish of San Pedro Soloma" and that said town belonged to the parish of Zuluma. After the Independence of Central America in 1821, San Juan Ixcoy went to the department of Totonicapán / Huehuetenango and was attached to the circuit of Jacaltenango for the administration of justice by means of the then novel system of jury trials.
Then, between 1838 and 1840 it was part of the State of the Highlands that the liberal Creoles tried to establish in the western part of the State of Guatemala, but that was recovered by force by the conservative mestizo general.
