San Juan La Laguna, is a municipality in the department of Sololá, in the Republic of Guatemala. Which is on the southwestern side of Lake Atitlan. The municipal seat is surrounded by hills: Cerro de Las Cristalinas, Cerro Kyaq Aaba'aj, Cerro Kajnom, is the part where Tz'utujil Indians have settled. It has three villages in the upper part: Palestine, Panyebar and Pasajquim which are indigenous Mayan k'iches. During the colonial era it was part of the encomienda of Atitlán, which was in charge of the descendants of the conquistador Sancho de Barahona.
After the Independence of Central America in 1821, was in the extensive department of Sololá / Huehuetenango, and in 1838 was part of the ephemeral State of Los Altos until it was reincorporated into the State of Guatemala by the conservative general Rafael Carrera in 1840. After the triumph of the Liberal Reformation of 1871, when that department was considerably reduced by the creation of the department of Quiché on August 12,1872, was assigned to the department of Sololá. In the 21st century, Hurricane Stan hit Guatemala as a category I hurricane and caused considerable damage to the municipality.
