Chat in Totonicapán

The municipality of Totonicapán -or San Miguel Totonicapán- is a municipality and head of the department of Totonicapán in the Republic of Guatemala. The majority of the population belongs to the ethnic group Quiché and is distributed on the municipal head, with 14,524 inhabitants in 2002, and the villages and hamlets in the rural area. During the pre-Columbian era and during the colonial era it was part of the Mayor's Office of the same name, and was the seat of the parish of San Miguel Totonicapam.

When Archbishop Pedro Cortés y Larraz visited the parish in 1770, he reported the abuses and mistreatment of Mayor Juan Bacaro suffered by the indigenous people of the town and caused many to leave the parishes and return to their ancestral beliefs, which he called "idolatry." In 1820, towards the end of the colony, an Indian revolt against excessive tributes led by Athanasius Tzul rose against the peninsular and Creole authorities in Totonicapán and Santa María Chiquimula, but was repressed by ladino militiamen, mainly from San Carlos Sija.

After the Independence of Central America in 1821, the town of Totonicapán was part of the Totonicapán / Huehuetenango department and in 1838 it was instrumental in the creation of the State of Los Altos, which was approved by the Congress of the Federal Republic of Central America In that same year, the liberal creoles of the region wanted to establish their own state with a port in Champerico and with the border with Mexico, but maintaining the indigenous taxes and secular laws that had been implemented in Guatemala during the government of Mariano Gálvez and that led to the social outbreak of the peasantry that rose up against the liberal "heretics" who had expelled the monastic orders and entered into business with the Protestant English, which caused constant peasant revolts in Los Altos, and tension with Guatemala, until hostilities broke out in 1840, and conservative mestizo general Rafael Carrera regained the region to Guatemala. The department of Totonicapán / Huehuetenango remained as such until August 12,1872, when the Liberal Revolution of 1871 had already triumphed six years after the death of General Carrera. On that date, the de facto government of provisional president Miguel García Granados created the new department of Quiché, taking a large part of the extensive territories of Totonicapán / Huehuetenango and Sololá / Suchitepéquez, thus becoming the head of the new department of Totonicapán. During the liberal government of Manuel Estrada Cabrera emerged the figure of a new indigenous redeemer in the village, but he was betrayed and reduced to prison where he died as a result of the tortures received.

The name of this character was not preserved because his file was confiscated by the president and was irremediably lost when the enraged population sacked the presidential residence after its overthrow in 1920. In the twenty-first century the municipality was incorporated into the Mancomunidad Metropolis de los Altos, an entity that involves several municipalities of the departments of Quetzaltenango and Totonicapán and that promotes the sustainable development of the same in the medium and long term, then, in October 2012, thousands of people of the 48 Cantons of Totonicapán performed a gigantic concentration in several points of the Interamerican highway against the transnational company ENERGUATE, the reforms to the teaching career and the constitutional reforms at that moment impelled by the government. But at the Alaska summit, state security forces killed six people of K'iche 'origin and wounded more than forty.

The origin of the shooting was not clarified and several soldiers were apprehended and were subject to trial, but the case did not advance although it left the General Otto Pérez Molina's government very badly off, which was eventually overthrown in 2015, after hearing the case of The Line. In the economic sphere, the majority of the population is dedicated to the agricultural production of maiz and beans, essentially for self-consumption, as well as the artisanal production of wooden furniture, woolen fabrics, ceramics, etc.
