Zaragoza is a municipality in the department of Chimaltenango, in the Republic of Guatemala. Originally known as "Chicoj", its name was changed to "Zaragoza" in 1892. According to the official census of 2002, its population is 17,908 inhabitants. Originally it was called "Chicoj", by the name of Kachikel cacique Francisco Oj, who was the owner of the land in 1711 and then, when several Creole families moved to the town, it was called "Valley of Our Lady of Pilar de Heredia".
After the Independence of Central America in 1821, the constitution of the State of Guatemala promulgated in 1825 the town of "Chicoj" -a former name of Zaragoza- was assigned to District No.8 for the administration of justice and when the State of Los Altos separated of Guatemala in 1838, Guatemala reorganized its departments, separating Chimaltenango and Sacatepéquez. Chicoj was assigned to Chimaltenango, when General Rafael Carrera recovered Los Altos in 1840, the departments of Chiqumaltenango and Sacatepéquez remained separated. In 1888 Zaragoza lost the category of municipality for not having the capacity to sustain itself. But the Government Agreement of January 27,1892 established it definitively. In 1895 the town was visited by the English archaeologist Alfred Percival Maudslay and his wife, Anne Cary Maudslay, when they were traveling from Antigua Guatemala to Atitlán, who described it as "a small indigenous town known for making rigs for backpacks that use the indigenous people to transport cargo ».
