The lower eastern Amuzgo of Santa Maria Ipalapa, is documented and some work is being done. The Southern Amuzgo spoken in Huixtepec, is not documented and some works are being worked on. The name Amuzgo is an exonym of Nahuatl origin derived from amox-co, which means 'place of books' referred to the town of Xochistlahuaca, which was colonial administrative center. Or perhaps,'in moss.' The speakers themselves call their language 'nomadic' or 'ñonndaa'.
