Jaraíz de la Vera is a Spanish town and municipality located in the northeast of the province of Cáceres, one of the two that make up Extremadura. It is located in the center-west of the Comarca de la Vera, of which it is the capital and the most important population, although the administrative headquarters of the Mancomunidad de La Vera is the neighboring town of Cuacos de Yuste. According to the INE, the official population as of January 1,2017 is 6514 inhabitants. This makes Jaraíz the ninth urban center of the province and the twenty-third in the region, being also the fifth with the highest population density.

With this, it constitutes 1.6% of the total population of Cáceres, very close to the urban nucleus are the towns of Torremenga and Collado de la Vera, forming a conurbation principle with the town. Regarding the list of services that the city offers, the population has an area of ​​influence of about 8800 people. Founded at the beginning of the Late Middle Ages, the town received the title of realengo village in 1685, the year in which it gained independence from the city of Plasencia. However, there are vestiges of Neolithic and Roman settlements in lands close to the town and numerous objects that suggest that there were settlements of these populations in times before the Middle Ages. Between 1920 and 1960, the town increased its population dramatically, doubling the data of the census. Between 1981 and 2001 a first decline in this growth began, which was corrected with another boom in the number of inhabitants.

He was motivated, among other causes, by immigration. Currently, the population is in a second regression. Jaraíz is known as the Paprika Capital of the World, since it is in this region where the highest quality paprika in the world is produced. In fact, the town has a museum dedicated to the precious spice. It is also the seat of the Regulatory Council of the Designation of Origin of the Pimentón de la Vera. The gastronomy of Jaraiceña, and the verata in general, is well known at the same time that varied, with a high consideration by gastronomic critics, guides of restaurants, etc. Gastronomy is considered one of the most important areas of the culture of the town, with a great reputation for kid stew and sausages, among others.

The Tapa Fairs also have a high prestige, in which various bars and restaurants of the city participate. The economy of the city is based mainly on commerce and the service sector, representing a high percentage of economic activity. Equally important is the construction sector. Jaraíz de la Vera is also a tourist destination of the first order, within Extremadura, given the historical character of the town, as well as the wonderful landscapes that surround the town. It is also close to other top destinations, such as Garganta la Olla or Yuste Monastery. Within the infrastructure it has to be remembered that Jaraíz is a hub of communications in this area of ​​Extremadura.

With regard to health infrastructures, the municipality has a recently expanded Health Center, which has been equipped with new tools and more medical personnel, that suppose a faster attention of the people of the Region, without having to resort to the Virgin Hospital of the Port of Plasencia.
