Kirkcaldy is the largest city in Fife, Scotland in the United Kingdom. Kirkcaldy is known as The Lang Toun in Scottish. This name derives from the original expansion of the city in a thin strip parallel to the sea front. The city developed down and up the coast, surrounding previously separated communities, but also extensively inland, so that the term The Lang Toun is now only a reference to its historical form. It is generally thought that the name Kirkcaldy derives from the words pictas caer, meaning strength, and caled, which means strong, and from the Scottish Gaelic word dun, which also means strength, hence the modern Gaelic Cathair Challdainn.
Other theories, in which the Culdees are less favored, involve the Scottish word kirk, which means church. The city is located on the northern coast of the Firth of Forth. The old boroughs of Dysart, Linktown and Pathhead, and the towns of Sinclairtown and Gallatown are now incorporated into Kirkcaldy. The size of Kirkcaldy reflects its historical importance as the largest settlement on the east coast, between Edinburgh and Dundee. Its location in a relatively protected bay of the Firth of Forth allowed the growth of the port, which had a considerable fishing fleet. Its interior includes good farmland and coal-rich minerals. The last ship that entered the port did so in 1991. Most of the dock area was consolidated with the construction of buildings.
The office of the Captain of the Port, a small but prominent building with a slate roof, had to be demolished after a fire in 2004. A neighborhood association wants to recreate the old house. Kirkcaldy was famous for most of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries for the manufacture of linoleum. The linen is produced with local linen for the annual Links Market week that celebrated its 700th anniversary in 2004. The city still has one of the longest sea fronts in Europe, which overlooks the Forth Fjord. It is assumed that in the seventeenth century had one of the oldest Latvian consulates, which reflected centuries of exchange with Scandinavia, the Baltic States and the Netherlands.
