Menai Bridge is a small town and community on the island of Anglesey in North Wales. It is located above the Menai Strait next to the suspension bridge of Menai, built in 1826 by Thomas Telford. It is the third largest settlement on the island, with a population of 3146 inhabitants, and occupies the area of the former parish of Llandysiliogogo, whose old church is still used as a mortuary chapel. Porthaethwy has existed for many centuries and still has a house in use dating from the seventeenth century. It is likely that there was a community in the Menai Bridge location since Roman times simply because this is the point with the least distance to cross the strait.
There are many buildings, among which: the old palace of justice, several old pubs and the constructions associated with the manufacture. The large parking lot at the nrote of the main street is the fairground. It is a communal land authorized to host an annual fair, called by the local people Fair Borth. When the fair reaches Menai Bridge on October 24 of each year it occupies the fairground and most of the other roads and streets of the city, making the passage through the city very difficult. It is an ancient tradition that attracts people from all over the island who ignore the generally inclement weather to enjoy the traditional ferial stops.
A television company has turned a disused garage into a row of lying shops in the center of Menai Bridge as a cinematic setting for the children's show Rownd a rownd that airs on the S4C channel. They also record the performance in the schools of the city: Ysgol and Borth and Ysgol David Hughes. The Menai Bridge Rugby Club was created in 1975 and played numerous matches in the area until in 1999 the club settled in Llyn-Y-Felin, one of the pictoresque fields in Wales. The club plays in the newly formed division 4 North after receiving promotion from the Gwynedd League in 2008. There is also a women's team and a children's team. The club's most famous former player is Robin McBryde, former captain of Llanelli, Wales international, 2003 Lion and current reserve coach of Wales. The team is led by Darren Owen and is assisted by Huw Percy and Andrew Brogden.
The training takes place every Thursday at 7 pm and new players of any age and ability are always welcomed. On November 12,1918 the Air Marshal Sir Thomas Elmhirst passed in the SSZ73 airship under the Menai bridge after the armistice at the end of World War II. At the east end of the city is the deep valley Cwm Cadnant, which is now crossed by a modern bridge built in the 1970s. The Afon Cadnant pours into the Menai Strait at this point and this small estuary serves as a natural harbor for small boats that cross from the mainland. This was the location of the landing stage of the bishops of Bangor, who had their residence in Glyn Garth, in Anglesey, but the cathedral was in Bangor, on the mainland.
Unfortunately, the bishop's palace was destroyed in recent years and was replaced by a block of flats. There are a number of small islands in the Menai Strait, some of which are connected to the city by roadways, including Ynys Faelog, Ynys Gaint and Ynys Castell east of the suspension bridge and Church Island west of the bridge. The Anglesey Maritime Trail runs along the docks. Menai Bridge has a wide selection of churches and chapels, encompassing a very attractive Catholic church. The city also has a primary school and a large bilingual secondary school, Ysgol David Hughes. Among the attractions on Menai Bridge are the 14th century church of San Tysilio, the port of San George and the butterfly house Pili Palas.
