Omagh is the capital and largest city of the county of Tyrone, in Northern Ireland, United Kingdom. It is located in the place where the Drumragh and Camowen rivers join to form the Strule River. The city has a population of 21,380 inhabitants and 28,000 more live in its metropolitan area. It is twinned with L'Haÿ-les-Roses, in France. It is believed that the city arose around an abbey founded in 792. In 1610, almost 150 years after the founding of the Franciscan monastery, Omagh was founded as a city. It served as a refuge for the fugitives from East Tyrone during the rebellion of 1641.
In 1689, the year in which the Battle of the Boyne took place, James II arrived at Omagh, on the road to Derry. The supporters of William III, Prince of Orange, burned the city. In 1768, he replaced Dungannon as the capital of the county of Tyrone. Omagh was connected by rail with Derry in 1852, with Enniskillen in 1853 and with Belfast in 1861. The military barracks were built in 1881. In 1899 the Tyrone County Hospital was opened. The hospital is today the subject of a massive campaign to maintain its services. The transport authority of Ulster closed the railway line of Omagh-Enniskillen in 1957 and the main line of Portadown-Derry in 1965, leaving the city without rail service. The city's large military barracks were closed on August 1,2007.
Among the famous visitors to Omagh are Bill Clinton, President of the United States, Irish President Maria McAleese and British Queen Elizabeth II.
