Runcorn is an industrial location and cargo port in Cheshire, England. It is located in the Borough of Halton. Runcorn had a population of about 61,000 in 2010. The town is located on the south bank of the Mersey River, where the estuary narrows to form the Runcorn Gap. Directly north on the other bank of the Mersey River is the town of Widnes. Upstream about 12 km northeast is the town of Warrington, and downstream about 25 km west of the city of Liverpool. The Manchester Canal runs along the coast of Runcorn by the Mersey River.
The Bridgewater canal ends in the canal basin in the center of town, as the ladder of gates that led to the navigation channel was filled many decades ago. Runcorn was an isolated village until the Industrial Revolution. At the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century, it was a summer resort. By the end of the 18th century, a port on the south coast of the Mersey River began to develop. During the 19th century, soap and alkali industries, quarries, marine shipyards, engineering, and tanning settled. By the beginning of the 20th century, the main industries were chemistry and tanning. Except for chemicals, all the old industries have disappeared and today commercial and industrial activity has diversified, especially driven by the connection to the motorway system and the development of logistics and distribution centers.
During the 1960s and 1970s a new population nucleus to the east developed, and urban residential areas. This has allowed the population to grow from about 26,000 inhabitants to 70,000 inhabitants at the beginning of the 21st century.
