St Leonards-on-Sea is a city in England, in the near western suburbs of Hastings. It was created as a seaside town by architect James Burton in the late 1820s. The original plans are now at the Hastings Museum. In 1827, Burton acquired a vast coastal area nearly one kilometer long and 750 meters wide, encroaching on a wooded valley known as "Old Woman's Tap Shaw". In his design of St Leonards, Burton is largely influenced by the experience of his collaboration with John Nash at Regent's Park in London. It imitates the imposing classical style applied to the adjoining buildings, but also to the public spaces, the architecture of pleasure and the picturesque individual villas.
Through this large-scale real estate operation, he built a series of adjoining houses, including his own house, West House. A prospectus of 1829 announces the various types of housing that will be proposed, and in 1832, most buildings are built. Until his death in 1837, he built the Royal Vitoria Hotel, the South Colonnade, a covered street with shops on the edge of the city of Hastings. His grave, in the churchyard of St Leonards Church, is marked with a pyramid. The Royal Victoria Hotel was built in 1828 by James Burton. The majestic classical building was visited by King George V, Prince Albert, Edward VII, Prime Ministers Gladstone and Palmerston, and the poet Alfred Tennyson. He received a large porch closed in 1903.
