Sturminster Newton, often called Stur by locals, is a village in the Blackmore Vale area, in the county of Dorset. It is located in the local government district and constituency of North Dorset. It is known to be the birthplace of the poet and author William Barnes, as well as a place where the famous writer Thomas Hardy spent part of his life. In 2001, it had a population of 3,105 inhabitants, of which 30.93% were retired. It has 43 businesses, a primary school and a secondary school. The buildings of both educational institutions need extensions to catch up with the rapid population growth of Sturminster and the surrounding villages. It is part of the historical circuit of the West Country Carnival.
Its cattle market, which was once one of the most important in its field in England, closed in 1998 and its land is being used in the construction of houses and retail stores. Sturminster Newton is located on a low altitude limestone ridge, in a meander of the river Stour, and is the center of a large milk producing region, which is of fundamental importance in the town's economy. The main part of it, including most of the businesses and services, has been located north of the river, but to the south extend Newton and Broad Oak, areas separated by a large floodplain. It is famous for its hydraulic mill and bridge, in which there is still an old sign that warned potential vandals that causing damage to this structure was punishable by criminal transport.
