Yelverton is a large town in the southwestern corner of Dartmoor, Devon, England. When the town's railway station opened in the 19th century, the village became a popular residence for Plymouth travelers. The railroad is now closed, but the Plym Valley Railroad has reopened a section of it. Yelverton is known for Roborough Rock, a prominent mass of stone near the Plymouth Road, at the south end of the airfield, giving its name to the Rock Hotel, built as a farm during the Elizabethan period, but adapted to the 1850s to meet the growing tourism in the area.
The area to the south and west of the rotunda in the center of town, was established at the end of the Victorian and Edwardian era, with many large and opulent villas. An area developed almost at the same time on an oddly shaped land south of the Tavistock road is known as Leg or 'Mutton Corner. At the beginning of World War II, an adjacent airfield was built at Harrowbeer as a combat station for the air defense of Devonport Dockyard and Western Approaches. A nineteenth-century terrace of houses, now converted into tents, had to be removed from its upper floor to provide an easier approach. A tall building that was not altered was the Church of San Pablo, but unfortunately the tower was hit by an airplane, which caused an alarm to go off.
The layout of the tracks is still very clear and, although they are completely covered with grass, the many bunkers of earth and brick, built to protect the fighters from the attack on the ground, are still in place. Some American aviators and anti-aircraft battery units were stationed here during the second half of the war. A plane carrying President Roosevelt landed here when its original destination was fogged. To the south of the village is Langton Park, home of the Yelverton Bohemians Cricket Club and about 0.5 km south is the elegantly named Moorland Garden Hotel that serves Yelverton Golf Club, where most of the holes run through the open moors to the east. There are several hostels in Yelverton, which cater to many walkers and visitors to National Trust properties in the area. Seth Lakeman, the Mercury Music Award nominee, comes from Yelverton. Former Sadlers Wells Ballet star, Maureen Bruce, lives in Yelverton.
The current Ravenscroft Residence was built as a private home, but in the 1930s it became the Ravenscroft School and during the Second World War chaos was made by officers of the Royal British Air Force at Harrowbeer airfield.
