Chat in Arriate

Arriate, is a municipality, Spanish of the province of Malaga, Andalusia, located in the west of the province being one of the towns that make up the region of the Serrania de Ronda. Its origin dates back to the year 1630 when the town of Arriate segregates from the municipality of Ronda although, five years later, in 1635 it returns to join Ronda forming part of the municipality. It is not until February 14,1661 that Arriate regains its independence and proclaims itself an independent Villa, annexing Ronda. By road it is located a hundred kilometers from Malaga and 589 km from Madrid. In 2000 it had 3 420 inhabitants and in 2017 with 4094.

The proximity to Ronda, as well as the higher cost of housing in that city, has led many workers of the same to settle in Arriate, which explains the high percentage growth of the population. Arriate, is a municipality in the region of Serranía de Ronda, twinned with La Junquera del Alto Ampurdán, belonging to the province of Gerona, in Catalonia. This municipality has its own band, the Municipal Band of Music of Arriate, founded in 1990. The repertoire of the band is dedicated, for the most part, to Holy Week. It also has another band, the CC Band. TT. Our Lady of the Rosary of Arriate, founded in March of the year 1994, which is known for being one of the best current bands that we can find in the musical panorama cofrade in Holy Week.

Although the first written test of the Villa de Arriate dates from 1570 in the Census of Felipe II, there are tests of the habitability of the area in remote times. It is spoken of a prehistoric town that lived in the Caves, caves located to both side of the Alcobacín River, that reveal the existence of some primitive dwellers, by their disposition, superimposed, excavated in the rocks, that would be good defense of their inhabitants against the beasts. At the moment one arrives at them by some steps made in the rock. In the interior there are no cave paintings, but the appearance of stone axes is frequent and there is a mill embedded in the walls. What was asylum and refuge of a town maintains its usefulness, because the millers of Arriate put there to dry the wheats after washing them.

In the stage of the Arab domination, it received the name of Arriadh. The number of inhabitants at this time must have been very small and they would inhabit a few recreational houses or hamlets with their gardens. The most important historical fact that is known, is the Battle of the Valley of Arriate in the year 1407. The Muslims sought to seize the machinery of Setenil. The warden of Cañete la Real, came to the defense of that town, leaving his own fortress defended by his son. When they learned this information, the Muslims attacked Cañete, in whose defense the warden's son died. As revenge, Hernando Arias prepared an ambush in the mountains of Arriate where he defeated the Muslims in the aforementioned battle.

In the year 1630 the Villa de Arriate was segregated from the Municipal District of Ronda. In 1635 rejoins back to Ronda, being on February 14,1661 by writing signed in Madrid before the scribe of King Philip IV, Gabriel Rodriguez de las Cuevas, when Arriate regains its independence by paying for it 352.739 maravedíes. As an anecdote we can say that there is a mountain in the Basque Country called Arrate, which in Basque means Entre piedras - a derivation of Arria arte. In the village of Arriate there is an institute called IES Sculptor Marín Higuero.
