Granada is a city and Spanish municipality, capital of the homonymous province, in the autonomous community of Andalusia. It is located in the center of the Vega district of Granada, at an altitude of 680 m. N. M., in a wide intrabetic depression formed by the river Genil and the foothills of the highest mass of the Iberian Peninsula, Sierra Nevada, which conditions its climate. The city is the seat of the Superior Court of Justice of Andalusia, Ceuta and Melilla, the highest judicial body in the autonomous community, the Advisory Council of Andalusia and the Archdiocese of Granada.

Likewise, it is the headquarters of the Training and Doctrine Command of the Army of the Spanish Armed Forces. In 2017 it was inhabited by 232,770 people, in a metropolitan area of ​​498 365. The neighborhoods that it has are very different from each other, partly due to the continued immigration that occurred until the 1990s. The most important are the Zaidín, the Albaicín, Sacromonte, Realejo, La Chana, Almanjáyar and La Cartuja. The Muslim Granada was the capital of the Zirí Kingdom of Granada, during the 11th century, and of the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada between the 13th and 15th centuries.

After the capture of the city by the Catholic Monarchs, it remained the capital of the Castilian Kingdom of Granada, which was already a simple territorial jurisdiction and which remained until 1833, when a new provincial division in Spain was produced, still in force. Its municipal coat of arms holds the titles of "Very noble, very loyal, named, great, celebrated and heroic city of Granada." Granada is a tourism destination, due to its monuments and the proximity of the ski resort of Sierra Nevada, as well as the historic area known as La Alpujarra and also the part of the coast of Granada known as Costa Tropical. Among its historical buildings, the Alhambra is one of the most important monuments in the country, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1984, next to the Generalife garden and the Albaicín. Its cathedral is considered to be the first Renaissance church in Spain.

The cultural offer of Granada includes a score of museums, among which the Science Park of Granada and the Museum of Fine Arts of Granada, considered the oldest provincial art gallery in the country. In addition, the city hosts the headquarters of the Manuel de Falla Archive and the Federico García Lorca Center. The University of Granada, according to the student data of 2007-2008, is the fourth nationally by number of students and is one of the most popular destinations for European university students of the Erasmus program.
