Hamilton is a city in the county of "Southern Grampians" in Victoria, Australia. The city is located at the crossroads of the Glenelg Highway and the Henty Highway. The Hamilton Highway connects the city to Geelong. It has 9,379 inhabitants. Describing itself as the world capital of wool, it prides itself on having the largest balls of wool in the world. The city is also famous for the Sir Reginald Ansett Transport Museum, which established Ansett Australia there in 1935. The city is built at the intersection of three indigenous populations: the "Gunditjmara" whose territory extended from the city to the south to the coast, the "Tjapwurong" to the north-east and the "Bunganditj" to the west.
These populations were practically sedentary because the area was and is fertile, well watered, allowing easy wildlife and eliminating the need to move for food. There are still dams and fish traps in Condah Lake south of Hamilton, as well as aboriginal stories of European settlers who settled very early in the area. On September 12,1836, Major Thomas Mitchell was the first European to cross the area where the city was to settle. He told of the fertility of the region and encouraged the shepherds to settle with their flocks and in 1839 the area was well settled. Conflicts broke out between the shepherds and the aborigines. The latter opposed the installation of foreigners on their tribal lands. They killed sheep for food and revenge for the settlement of Europeans on their hunting ground.
It is quite certain that a certain number of aborigines were killed at that time as a result of these conflicts.
