More information about Honiara

Honiara is the capital of the Solomon Islands. It is located on the island of Guadalcanal, although it does not belong to that province, but has territorial status of the capital. The last official census dates from 1999 and number in 49 107 the number of inhabitants of the city, a figure that increases to 66 824 in estimates for the year 2009. This number of inhabitants makes it the most populated city in the country. The city was rebuilt to house the capital of the archipelago, replacing the old capital, Tulaghi, after the end of the Second World War. It was named capital of the country in 1952, and it was from then on that its growth took place.

The airport area east of Honiara was the site of the Battle of Henderson Field, in 1942, between the US and Japanese troops during the Guadalcanal Campaign in World War II, which ended with the US victory. The city has an airport, the Honiara International Airport, and a port at Point Cruz, which serves for the export of coconut, wood and gold. There are also the main administrative bodies and buildings of the country's government and the National Museum. The National Parliament of the Solomon Islands, the Honiara Solomon Islands College of Higher Education, the Woodford International School and the University of the South Pacific Solomon Islands are located in the city. Politically it is divided into three constituencies, chosen by three of the fifty members of the National Parliament. These circumscriptions are three of the six that have more than 10,000 registered voters throughout the country.

Since the end of the 1990s, the city has witnessed violent ethnic clashes and political turmoil that have led to riots. In June 2000, there was a coup d'état that ended in violent combats and revolts between the ethnic Malaitans from the Malaita Eagle Force and the Guadalcanal natives of the Istabu Freedom Movement. Violence was predominant in the streets of Honiara, and although a peace agreement was reached in October 2000, violence reappeared in March 2002, when two New Zealand diplomats were killed along with many other people. The situation reached such a point that in July 2003, Australian troops and police arrived in the country to restore order. In 2006, unrest broke out after the election of Snyder Rini as Prime Minister, and a part of Chinatown was destroyed and more than 1,000 Chinese residents had to move.

The commercial center of Honiara was destroyed and reduced to ashes, and the city devastated. As a result, tourism in the city and on the islands was severely affected. Honiara is predominantly Christian and contains the headquarters of the Church of the Province of Melanesia, the Archdiocese of Honiara, the South Seas Evangelical Church, the United Church in Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands, the Seventh-day Adventist Church and other Christian churches.
