Port Pirie is a city in South Australia, Australia, located 224 km north of Adelaide. The city was founded in 1845. It houses lead foundries but also silver, zinc, copper and gold. It has 17,488 inhabitants in 2006. The city is located 8 km inland, wedged between Spencer Gulf to the west and Flinders Range to the east, on the Pirie River Estuary. Port Pirie has a semi-arid climate that makes the area unfit for cultivation. Average maximum temperatures range from 16.4 °C in winter to 31.8 °C in summer. The average annual rainfall is 345.2 millimeters. The city owes its name to the first boat, the John Pirie who landed in the estuary to bring sheep.

Before the arrival of the Europeans, the region was inhabited by the Nukunu aborigines. The place was called 'Tarparrie' which would mean the 'muddy river'. The first European to see the area was Matthew Flinders in 1802 when he explored the Spencer Gulf by boat.
